Musings about myself
I find myself naturally observing and studying people; breaking an individual down to their traits within their nuanced cultural identities and lived experiences, analyzing their communication and interaction patterns, and examining how they navigate their environment when they are alone and when they are with others. I enjoy listening to the stories of others, especially the nitty-gritty details that provide insights into the patterns, anomalies, paradoxes, and inconsistencies in human behaviour and motivation.
A few parallels between how I experience the world and how I design
Learning about people, places, and things allow me to make sense of my world and embrace the diversity of thoughts and ideas. I see design as a tool to enhance human experiences, a discipline that sits at the intersection between humanities, social sciences, and technology. Design is a vessel that allows me to find comfort in problems and processes, to be curious and experimental among chaos and complexities, and to make mistakes and move onward and upward.
How I stumbled upon Design
Design is in pursuit of group interests, one that fulfills the collective needs. Art is in pursuit of my self-interests, one that fulfills my individual needs. As a child, I remember being enamored by the sound of scissors cutting cardboard in Art Attack and pallet knives scraping canvas in The Joy of Painting. I spent my weekends following Neil Buchanan in making arts and crafts. I was first introduced to graphic design in my Grade 11 Desktop publishing class. Suddenly my desire to make things presented itself in both physical and digital mediums.
My interests outside of work
It’s strange how learning works; the more I learn, the more I discover things I had no idea even existed. Although I cannot acquire all the knowledge in the world, I feel content with just being aware of how much I don’t know. I enjoy learning about who I am to the people, places, and things around me from books.
